Breastfeeding question for parents of toddlers and infants?
I have twins who are going to be 20 months old when my new baby comes into the world.
I plan on breastfeeding, however I have been reading that some babies are easily distracted by commotion and require peace and quiet in order to eat.
What do/did you do with your toddlers while you were trying to breastfeed in a quiet place? It’s not practical to only nurse at naptime. What if your baby is a long nurser which may require you to leave your toddlers unattended for up to 30-40 minutes every 2 hours? How does that work?
Thanks in advance for people who have been there/done that.
On a side note, no, there is nobody who can come over and help me. I will essentially be on my own after 2 weeks when my husband goes back to work.
Congratulations! I don’t know if you’re having a boy or girl, so I’ll just say “he” and you can think “she” if it’s a girl.
First question – Do you own a sling? That is a great way for your newborn to be close to you and you’ll have your hands free to play with your toddlers. Also your baby can nurse from you while he is in the sling if he is positioned right. It doesn’t necessarily fix the situation if he really prefers to nurse with total peace and quiet, but your toddlers are going to be old enough to sit and do coloring or watch a Sesame Street video while you nurse if noise is a problem. I know you probably don’t want them watching a lot of TV, but it’s a good option for those times when you really need to occupy them with something for a short time. Good luck!
