Guide to Picking the Perfect Baby Name
Picking the perfect baby name for your little one even before he arrives is a customary gesture that usually involves all of the immediate families. Sounds pretty easy, but getting down on the final name is usually the hardest part especially when there are derivations and selections from the old folks [a.k.a. grandma and grandpa].
But what’s really in a name? Will your child appreciate it when he grows up? Or will he resent you for choosing one that he finds weird?
No one will know your child’s reactions to his/her name until he has grown up. For now, it is best to stick for whatever you believe your baby might like. Some parents find it easier by naming their children after their ancestors and just adding a touch of modern middle or second name to it.
Some parents leave out the immediate family’s intervention and just do the researching and naming of their child on their own. This is probably a better idea instead of getting too many suggestions that you find hard to reject because they are your family.
Looking for resources of baby names should be your initial step. Stop looking at television or celebrities if you are after unique names that will best represent your child and your surname. Sure, it may be tempting to name your child after a famous rock star or a sultry actress. But try to get real and think if the name will suit your child when he is already grown up.
Try these practical tips while you’re figuring out the name of your baby:
- There should be a flow within the first and last name of your child. Consider the number of syllables for each and see if the flow is good enough.
- Avoid names that produce mean nicknames, weird names or archaic-sounding names. Your child might get teased or be tagged for a nasty-sounding nickname.
- Some parents may agree that the shorter the name, the better. It is also advantageous to your child especially when it’s time to go to school.
- Avoid choosing two neutral names from both genders since it can cause confusion.
- Avoid names that are difficult to spell. This can create some problems for your child especially when writing and reading it for the first time.
- Avoid rhyming names and names that sound synonymous [Marie Lily or Mabel April, something of that kind].
- Avoid too long names or two to three names just for a first name [i.e. Marie Antoinette Sabine, Lee Anthony Nicholas, Richard Maurice Benedict, and so on]. Long or multiple names that can be cut into a single name is more appropriate and practical for the child because it is confusing and may cause difficulties during the first years in school.
You can look through books, articles as well as ebooks and websites to give you an idea of what to name your child. Naming your child should be an exciting task for you and your spouse. It is okay to ask suggestions from your family and friends. But the final decision should come from you.
